Agriculture; Employment, Economic and foreign Exchange
Hi , Alesha here with additional
information on my previous post GMOs and Employment Opportunities.
Did you know that agriculture is one of the major source of
employment for people living in the Caribbean? Well in fact it is especially for
those living in rural areas where land is available and people would have practice the act of self- employment by planting crops and selling them to make a living. Imagine with the incorporation of GMOs of what the outcome can be. Furthermore, did you know that agriculture is one of the main livelihood for
more than half the world and it contributes to the economic aspect of many
developing countries? Well however, it does but with high input of agricultural
production. (Dr. Bright Singh)
Managing scarce water resources
and climate change for sustainable agricultural production in the Caribbean.
However, farmers who have larger plot of land would be able
to hire people to work for them, for example, rice and watermelon farmers at
the Nariva swamp, Trinidad.
Also, advance farming like that of commercial farm and
state-owned farms creates even more job opportunity because, for instance, with
a state-owned farm, the government can subsidies it in order to feed its people
and thus create employment. As well as in terms of export, it will bring in foreign
exchange and make a stronger trade link where the first world would be
dependent on what is being provided e.g. Trinitario cocoa which is an important
commodity in the world economy. (Caribbean Agribusiness)
The Role and Importance of Agriculture
in the Caribbean. Organisation involved in its development. The role of soils
and plant types.
Also, did you know that the lack of rural employment other
than agriculture would lead to urbanization, that is the movement from country
(rural) to the city (urban); which would further lead to over population in the
city, high crime rates, pollution of water ways, air pollution with respect to
car exhaust. Furthermore, large growing cities require an abundant and cheap
food, whereas the farmer would need an adequate and stable product price.
In conclusion, agriculture may not be a major foreign
exchange in the Caribbean but it accounts for a percentage of economic
earnings.
