GRCs Affecting Us..

Hello everyone, it’s Sarah here again. Last week I posted about Glyphosate, so if you haven’t already, go have a read before continuing. So as revealed in my previous post, I will be talking about the effects of glyphosate on us, humans.

Glyphosate and GMOs?

It was established that glyphosate is a herbicide which inhibits the EPSPS enzyme in plants, or more commonly known as the Shikimate pathway in microorganisms. Since the Shikimate pathway helps synthesize essential amino acids, inhibition of this can lead to extreme negative effects in humans as we cannot get these amino acids any other way than from food (Medline Plus, 2017). The Shikimate pathway is also linked to the folate, serotonin, melatonin, melanin and dopamine (Samsel and Seneff, 2015) just to name a few. These biological molecules contributes to:
  • Development of the fetus during pregnancy
  • Sleep pattern; wake and sleep
  • Pigmentation
  • Mood; anxiety, anger, happiness
Who would have thought a trace remnant of a herbicide on food can affect your mood.

So then why are we still using glyphosate if we know that it can prevent the production of these ESSENTIAL amino acids?
According to Samsel and Seneff, 2015, industries which produce and use glyphosate have only carried out testing on rodents for a span no longer than 3 months, as this was an approved time frame to test for toxicity. However, we do not eat foods solely for three months and then stop eating right? Exactly. Nevertheless, there was a study conducted on the life span of rodents fed with GRCs and the effects were astounding (Samsel and Seneff, 2015)

The video below talks about glyphosate and how it accumulates in our body over time.

You Won't Believe How Glyphosate Affects You

What are the effects of glyphosate after long term use?
Ultimately, according to Samsel and Seneff, the major effect of glyphosate from GRCs, is a Manganese deficiency. However, this is linked to:
  • Autism
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Osteoporosis
  • Reduced dopamine production - leading to decreased feeling of happiness
  • Anxiety
Is Glyphosate Linked to ASD?

So after all of this, I came across a few blogs that thought otherwise about glyphosate. Have a look.

What are your opinions about glyphosate?

What does this mean for GM crops?
Are we to completely boycott them?
Should Trinidad not consider them as a means of food security?
Or is there any solution that can be found for this problem of glyphosate?

Stay tuned for more!
